Amazing Cure Eliminates Digestion Pain in Under a Day
By Jessica Katz

While thinking of digestion pain, the kind that generally comes to mind is the kind that trails up the lower back and into the hip. While this is the most common, stomach back pain or digestive pain is also fairly common and can create huge problems over time. When dealing with stomach back pain, the middle of the spine is affected, this is composed of a dozen vertebrae that span along the center of the back, attaching to the rib cage.

A majority of the time, stomach back pain is the result of a strained muscle, but sometimes is the effect of a herniated or slipped disc. Diagnosis can be easily determined with use of an x-ray. You can then talk with your doctor to work out a treatment plan.

Signs of Stomach Digestion Pain Problems:

It is not always required to go to the doctor when dealing with stomach pain alone as it is usually the result of eating something you shouldn’t have. When dealing with other pain you should always get it checked out because it could be the start of something bad.

When they occur together you should get it checked out immediately as stomach back pain is a leading cause of disability. Any pain in your back should be checked out immediately to avoid further problems.

Treatment for Stomach and Back Pain:

When dealing with both pains, doctors recommend spending only a couple days in bed. Lying on your back with your legs elevated is the best position for treatment for this type of pain. After you are feeling better, you should start an exercise course to help you stomach and back muscle to become stronger. This will help make sure digestive pain doesn’t reoccur.

Chamomile Tea For Digestion

Chamomile Tea For Digestion
By Venk P

Chamomile tea has been known for centuries for its soothing and relaxing properties, being used commonly to aid with problems such as insomnia, nervousness, as well as a comforting remedy during illnesses such as colds and flu. What many people don’t know is that chamomile tea is an excellent remedy to help with digestion. Poor digestion is likely rooted in our poor food choices, poor eating habits and the fast-paced lifestyles. Correcting these are the key to having a health digestive system, but there are things that can be done to help alleviate daily chronic symptoms that many people experience such as gas, bloating, cramping, diarrhea and constipation. One of the best herbal remedies as a “cure-all” for nearly all digestive problems, is drinking a high quality chamomile tea.

Chamomile tea contains essential oils and flavanoids, which actually relax the smooth muscles in the digestive tract, to relieve pain and cramping and promote normal peristalsis (the contractions of your intestinal tract that help move food along). Another class of compounds called sesquiterpenes, have anti-inflammatory effects which helps soothe the irritated lining of the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the inflammation associated with poor digestion. This tea also acts as a relaxant, to help calm down nervousness and tension. Many people who suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) also suffer from symptoms of anxiety, which have been shown to contribute to their digestive complaints. It is well known that the digestive tract has many connections to the central nervous system, and therefore anxiety and emotional issues can have a huge impact on how your body digests food. By drinking chamomile tea regularly, and calming the system, people with IBS can help their symptoms by directly affecting their digestive tract, and indirectly by helping to relieve nervousness.

For people who have very mild digestion issues, drinking chamomile tea on “as-needed” basis is sufficient. However, for people with chronic symptoms it is important to be able to get a high enough dose of the beneficial compounds, which can be achieved by drinking 3 to 5 cups per day, on a regular basis. Use 2 tsp of flower per cup, and infuse for 5 -10 minutes covered. Drink the tea while still hot, before all the beneficial essential oils evaporate.

The importance of drinking a high quality chamomile tea cannot be understated. Most grocery-store brands contain merely the “dust” and bits of flower that remain after sorting and packaging. Choose a brand that consists of high quality loose whole flowers, which contain the highest concentration of beneficial compounds to ensure that you get the freshest, most flavorful and health-promoting cup of tea.

* For those with allergies to ragweed, please use caution with chamomile, as it is part of the same family of herbs as ragweed, and some people may experience a cross-reaction. Try a cup or two, and if no allergy symptoms appear (such as an itchy throat) then you’re probably fine.

*Women who are pregnant should not drink chamomile tea.

Ayurvedic View of Optimal Digestion

Ayurvedic View of Optimal Digestion
By Dr. Sharada Hall

Is your digestion as good as it could be? According to Ayurveda, the physical root of all disease is improper digestion. Therefore, maintaining good digestion is the key to optimal health. The Sanskrit term for digestive fire is “agni”. There are many factors that decrease it’s capability, like stress and improper diet. Yet many good habits can improve agni. Chief among them is starting off the day with the perfect breakfast.

Imagine you are living in a home that is heated solely by a wood stove. To get it started in the morning, it is necessary to begin with just the right size kindling to build the fire. Newspaper might be used beneath some twigs and thin strips of wood. Then as that catches, you begin to add larger and larger logs of wood until the fire is really roaring. The fire will now stay strong for the whole day with the addition of more wood.

Agni is like the fire in the wood stove. As the morning sun rises in the sky, our inner fire awakens as well. First thing in the morning, the agni needs just the right size kindling in order to be fueled. Eating only fruit for breakfast is like putting paper on the fire. The fire consumes it but is not made stronger. And eating a heavy breakfast of bacon and eggs can smother the fire like placing a big log in the fire before the kindling. The ideal kindling for our digestion in the morning is a hot, whole grain porridge. Whole grains nourish the Earth element that is our digestion. When they are slowly cooked to unleash their inner vitality, they benefit digestion, increase assimilation, and boost metabolism. Choose the appropriate grains and seasonings for your constitution. You will find yourself quite hungry within a few hours. Don’t worry about an increased appetite; true hunger is a very good sign that your digestive fire is alive and well. Because you have already burned through the kindling, by mid to late morning you’re ready for more substantial fuel.

Most people are in the habit of having coffee or tea first thing in the morning, both of which extinguish our appetite and our agni. I wouldn’t dare forbid anyone from having their morning coffee, for fear of having my head cut off, but it is wise to accompany the caffeine with the porridge nonetheless. It will still do it’s job of feeding our fire.

So it turns out, as usual, that our mothers were right all along. Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day.

Digestion - How the Large Intestine Digests Food

Digestion - How the Large Intestine Digests Food
By James Lahey

After all of the useful and digestible nutrients have been stripped out of your food during the digestion process, the remaining water and indigestible waste such as fiber, moves into the top of your large intestine. The top of the large intestine is known as your colon. The colon is primarily responsible for absorbing water from this mixture and then compacting the remaining matter into a dense bundle known as feces.

People often wonder why feces are brown in color. This is because the color of feces comes from leftover bile pigments. They are made of indigestible material from food, cells that have fallen off the intestinal lining and bacteria, actually quite a lot of bacteria. In fact, about 30 percent of the entire weight of feces is bacteria. However, these bacteria are not a sign that you are sick. Quite the opposite actually, they prove that you are healthy and well.

The bacteria in feces are good guys and they are made up of microorganisms that live in colonies in your colon. They manufacture vitamin B12, which is absorbed through the colon wall. They produce vitamin K, also absorbed through the colon wall. They break down amino acids and produce nitrogen (this is what gives feces a distinguishable odor). And finally they feast on indigestible complex carbohydrates like fiber which produces gas. When excreted this gas can sometimes make you physically uncomfortable.

When the bacteria have finished all their jobs, the feces are passed down through your rectum and out through your anus. However, remember that this does not happen right away. Digestion of one meal may take longer than an entire day to complete. After this process is finished, digestion is complete.

Digestion of Sludge - Optimizing Digestion in Wastewater Treatment

Digestion of Sludge - Optimizing Digestion in Wastewater Treatment
By Richard Runion

Sludge Digestion Tanks

A sludge digestion tank is an R.C.C. tank of cylindrical shape with a hopper bottom and is covered with a fixed or floating type of roof. The latter makes the digestion of sludge much more effective. The weight of the cover is supported by sludge, and the liquid forced between the tank wall and the side of the cover provides a good seal. The raw sludge is pumped into the tank where it is seeded with digested sludge.

On undergoing anaerobic digestion, gases of decomposition (chiefly Ch4 , CO2) are given out by the anaerobic digester. Sludge gas rises out of the digesting sludge. It moves along the ceiling of the cover and collects in the gas dome. The cover can float on the surface of the sludge between the landing brackets and the overflow pipe. Rollers around the circumference of the cover keep it from binding against the tank wall.

The digested sludge, which settles down to the bottom of the tank is removed under hydrostatic pressure periodically, say, once a week. To maintain optimum temperature, the tank is generally provided with heating coils through which hot water is circulated.

The supernatant liquor i.e., the part of the tank content lying between the scum and the sludge is withdrawn at the optimum level through a number of withdrawal points located at different elevations of the tank. As it is high in BOD and suspended matter contents, it is sent back to the incoming raw sewage for undergoing re-treatment. During the digestion of sludge, the scum formed at the surface gets broken up by the recirculating flow or through mechanical rackers called scum-breakers.

The amount of sludge gas produced during digestion of sludge varies from 0.014 to 0.028 m3 per capita with 0.017 m3 being quite common. The gas produced contains 65 per cent of methane with a calorific value 5400 — 5850 kcal. m3, 30 per cent of carbon dioxide and balance 5 per cent of nitrogen and other inert gases. It resembles natural gas and may be used as a fuel for cooking. Principal uses however, are for driving gas engines, and for heating sludge to promote quick digestion of sludge.
